WINNIPEG – RCMP in Manitoba say a body has been found in a home that burned after officers exchanged gunfire with a suspect who then barricaded himself inside.
Police issued a news release saying they showed up at the home in the Rural Municipality of Prairie Lakes on Friday night to execute an arrest warrant, but the 38-year-old saw them coming and retrieved a gun.
The release says he shot towards the officers, and there was then an “exchange of gunfire” before he barricaded himself inside the residence.
Police say officers at the scene noticed smoke coming from the home and it became engulfed in flames.
They say a body was recovered from the home on Saturday morning and an autopsy has been scheduled to confirm the victim’s identity.
The release says no officers were physically injured.
RCMP say the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has been notified and has taken carriage of the investigation.
