OTTAWA — Environmentalists are declaring victory over the federal government agreeing to increase oversight of habitat for threatened species on provincial land.
The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society says it is withdrawing legal action against Ottawa after federal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna made the promise.
Last week, McKenna released a report suggesting the provinces weren’t doing enough to protect caribou habitat.
Her officials also found some caribou populations are facing an imminent threat of disappearing, which is the last step before the federal cabinet can step in and order conservation.
McKenna has promised a report on provincial protections for 150 other species where critical habitat has been identified.
That report is due in June 2019.
