Officer-involved shooting injures man on Saskatchewan First Nation

CUT KNIFE, Sask. – Mounties say an independent, external investigation has been launched after a shooting involving their officers injured a man on a Saskatchewan First Nation.

RCMP say in a news release their detachment in Cut Knife, Sask., received three separate reports early Saturday involving a 49-year-old man from Little Pine First Nation.

The reports were of an assault, a firearm being pointed at Little Pine Security members and an abandoned 911 call of a male with a firearm thinking about suicide.

The release says two officers later encountered the man with a firearm outside a home on Little Pine First Nation, and their response “involved the discharge of a firearm and the man was injured.”

The injured man was treated and released from hospital a few hours later into police custody.

The release says no police officers were injured and a firearm was located at the scene.

Saskatchewan RCMP say the Saskatoon Police Service and the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team will investigate the incident.

The RCMP says it has also requested the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General appoint independent investigation observers, including one Indigenous observer.
