Herons dead, leak from mine tailings: Some environmental fines in Canada

A Saskatchewan judge has fined Husky Energy $3.8 million for a pipeline leak that released oil into the North Saskatchewan River in July 2016.

Here are some other environmental fines handed down in courts in the last few years:

Jan. 3, 2019 — Oilsands giant Syncrude is fined $2.7 million for federal and provincial offences after the death of 31 blue herons in a sump pond near Fort McMurray, Alta.

July 13, 2018 — Nexen Energy is fined $290,000 after a pipeline leaked water, sand and bitumen near Anzac, Alta.

Oct. 3, 2017 — Sherritt International Corp. is fined $105,000 after leaking effluent from coal-mine tailings near Edson, Alta.

June 16, 2017 — Canadian National Railways is fined $2.6 million over oil leakage from maintenance operations in Edmonton.

June 12, 2017 — Prairie Mines is fined $3.5 million in federal and provincial penalties after a tailings dike fails at the Obed coal mine near Hinton, Alta.
