CLARK’S HARBOUR, N.S. – A search is underway for a fisherman who went overboard this morning off Cape Sable Island in Nova Scotia.
Lt. Commander Len Hickey says Halifax’s Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre received a mayday at 8:21 a.m. about a man who’d fallen off a 12-metre long fishing vessel about six nautical miles south of the island.
A Cormorant helicopter and a Hercules aircraft were dispatched to search for the man alongside the Cape Roger and Clark’s Harbour coast guard ships.
Hickey said between 12 and 15 other vessels, including local fishing boats, also pitched in to help.
He says the CCGS Cape Roger remains in the area with a plane from PAL Airlines to keep searching through the night.
Cape Sable Island is a small island that sits just off Nova Scotia’s southernmost tip.
Hickey says ocean conditions in the area are moderate, with 46-kilometre-an-hour winds and four-metre high waves
